FDE vs DevOps engineer: overlap and gaps
Updated

Both keep production alive. One owns the platform, the other owns the customer outcome that runs on it.
The overlap is real: both roles deploy, monitor and recover. The gap is who you answer to when the alert fires at a customer site.
The short answer
DevOps engineers build the platform every team deploys on. FDEs deliver one customer system through that team's constraints, then hand it over with proof.
The decision table
| Axis | DevOps engineer | Forward deployed engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Customer | Internal developers | External operators and owners |
| Ships | Pipelines, clusters, standards | Slices with briefs and metrics |
| Discovery | Requirements from teams | Interviews with users |
| On-call | Own platform | Customer system until handover |
| Handover | Docs for engineers | Runbook plus training recording for operators |
Worked example: the same incident, two owners
A fictional deploy (fictional) fails inside a Tuesday change window. The DevOps engineer owns the pipeline fix and the rollback path. The FDE owns the customer communication, the stop-line call, and the readout entry with cause and prevention. Either alone leaves half the job undone. The constraints post shows the window discipline; the rollback post is the shared craft.
Checklist: which path
- Platforms and automation excite you most: DevOps. Customer problems and interviews: FDE.
- You want one stack deep: DevOps. You want many stacks shallow-to-medium: FDE.
- Internal users are enough: DevOps. External owners and operators call you: FDE.

Frequently asked questions
Do FDEs do DevOps work?
Yes, constantly: containers, pipelines, deploys and rollbacks inside customer constraints. But the goal is the customer outcome, not the platform itself.
Do DevOps engineers meet customers?
Internal customers, usually: developers. FDEs meet external operators and owners, run discovery, and sign briefs.
Which path first?
DevOps first gives you the production spine: deploy, observe, roll back. FDE work then adds discovery, scoping and handover on top.
