Capstone briefs

The three briefs with self-review rubrics are public self-study materials. External review and the proposed live defense are not available; there is no scoring.

Capstone: Integration Delivery

12 hours · 5 preparation lessons

Deliver an end-to-end integration with reconciliation, error reporting, and a runbook, against a deliberately messy two-source scenario.

Read the scenario

A mid-size distributor, Meridyen Logistics (fictional), receives purchase orders through two channels: an EDI feed that delivers JSON with occasional duplicate event IDs, and a supplier portal exporting CSV weekly with inconsistent column headers and timezone-naive timestamps. Order volume is 900 per week, with a 1.5 percent duplicate or malformed rate observed in the EDI feed.

Your job: design and implement (against fixtures you create from this description) a sync service that loads both channels into one canonical order model, deduplicates, quarantines failures, and produces an honest weekly report the operations team can read. The scenario is fictional; the engineering bar is real.

Deliverables

  • Design document: canonical model, sync strategy, dedup and quarantine design
  • Working code (language of your choice) with fixtures for both sources and the malformed cases
  • Test suite covering dedup, quarantine, and the ambiguous 'write may have landed' case
  • Weekly report template populated with plausible numbers labeled fictional
  • Runbook: top three symptoms with checks and actions

Self-review rubric

Canonical model is explicit and both mappers are complete%15
Idempotency and dedup are correct under at-least-once delivery%20
Quarantine preserves payloads and supports reprocessing%15
Report is honest: numbers reconcile with the fixture data%15
Tests cover the failure cases, not just the happy path%20
Runbook is runnable by someone who did not write the code%15

The whole scenario, including company names, is fictional.

Capstone: Secure Knowledge Delivery

12 hours · 6 preparation lessons

Deliver a permission-aware RAG system over a multi-team corpus, with a published evaluation scorecard and an access-control story that survives review.

Read the scenario

A 300-person company, Vireo Health (fictional), wants an internal assistant over its wiki: HR policies, clinical protocols, IT runbooks, and finance procedures. Documents have per-team visibility; some HR documents are executive-only. The assistant must never surface a document the asking user cannot open in the wiki, must cite sources, and must say when it does not know.

Volumes: about 4,000 documents, 50 new or changed per week. Budget: a fixed monthly model spend you must state and stay under. The security reviewer will ask one question: how do you prove isolation?

Deliverables

  • Design document: chunking, metadata, permission model, retrieval architecture
  • Working pipeline (fixtures or a small real corpus you build) with filtered retrieval
  • Evaluation scorecard: 30 questions with retrieval and generation scores, labeled fictional where invented
  • Adversarial test results: four cross-team probes with expected and actual outcomes
  • Cost model with the monthly ceiling and the levers you would pull first

Self-review rubric

Access filtering happens in the retrieval query, proven by tests%25
Metadata model supports permissions, freshness, and citations%15
Scorecard separates retrieval and generation with real numbers%20
Adversarial probes included and honestly reported%15
Cost model is arithmetically sound with a ceiling%10
Answers cite sources and decline when evidence is missing%15

The whole scenario, including company names, is fictional.

Capstone: Customer Workflow Delivery

14 hours · 6 preparation lessons

Take a workflow from discovery brief to handover: approval-gated automation with an ROI model, a rollout plan, and a complete handover package.

Read the scenario

A 150-person insurance broker, Anka Sigorta Operations (fictional), processes 240 endorsement requests per week by email. Staff re-key data from PDFs into the policy system, check three rules manually, and email customers back. Current state: 35 minutes average handling time, two percent error rate, and one compliance complaint per quarter traced to missed rule checks.

You run the whole engagement on paper plus a working prototype: the discovery brief with acceptance criteria, the tool-using agent design with human approval gates, the rollout and rollback plan, the ROI model with assumptions and owners, and the handover package. The prototype must demonstrate the approval gate; the rest is documents at production quality.

Deliverables

  • One-page brief with in/out-of-scope and testable acceptance criteria
  • Workflow design: agent tools, action classes, approval gate, audit trail
  • Working prototype (any stack) demonstrating the approval gate on fixtures
  • Rollout plan: strategy, go/no-go criteria, rollback, migration note
  • ROI model with baseline, assumptions, owners, and a 90-day review plan
  • Handover package using the six-row structure, complete for this scenario

Self-review rubric

Brief is testable and honest about scope limits%15
Agent design binds identity, classes actions, gates the sensitive ones%20
Prototype demonstrates the approval gate end to end%20
Rollout plan is executable and rollback is tested on paper%15
ROI assumptions are sourced and owned, costs all-in%15
Handover package has no empty rows%15

The whole scenario, including company names, is fictional.

Course questions

What does the FDE Foundations course cover?

Twelve modules that mirror the job: the FDE role, customer discovery, problem framing, software craft, data and integration, AI decisions, RAG and retrieval, agents and tools, production, reliability, security, and business impact and handover. 48 lessons, 24 practice tasks, all free to read.

Is the FDE course free?

Yes. Every Foundations lesson, practice task and the readiness quiz are readable without an account. Only the certification exam is a paid product; planned sittings run Dec 2026 to Mar 2027 and booking opens after the live checkout is verified.

Does finishing the course certify me?

No. The course teaches and lets you practice; the separate certification exam (495 USD for Foundations, planned sittings 27 Dec 2026 and 27 Feb 2027) is the assessment. Booking opens after the live checkout is verified, and no credential is issued before an assessed pass.

How long does the Foundations course take?

Each lesson takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes including its exercise; the full 48 lessons are a few weekends of focused reading plus practice time for the 24 tasks. There is no deadline and no enrollment.

Is the course available in Turkish?

Yes. All 48 Foundations lessons, the module titles, all practice tasks and the readiness quiz are published in Turkish under /tr. Guides and supporting articles are English-first while translation continues.

Foundations questions

What is FDE Foundations?
