Forward deployed engineer salary: what 2026 listings actually show

Posted pay bands for FDE-titled roles, read on public pages on 2026-10-10 with sources: Palantir, OpenAI, Anduril and Picogrid figures plus what the listings leave out.

Every number below was read on a public page on 2026-10-10. Each carries its source. Nothing is estimated, and postings that showed no number are listed as such. Pay posts go stale fast, so re-check before quoting any of this in a negotiation.

The short answer

Verified US postings for FDE-titled roles cluster around 113K to 200K USD in base salary, with senior and San Francisco bands higher. Equity is almost always mentioned but almost never valued, so posted bands understate total pay.

Posted bands, with sources

Employer and rolePosted bandWhat it isChecked
Palantir, Forward Deployed Software Engineer, New York135,000 to 200,000 USDBase salary; posting adds that RSUs, sign-on and incentives may apply, with no values2026-10-10, no publication date shown
Picogrid, Forward Deployed Engineer, El Segundo CA or Fort Bragg NC120,000 to 200,000 USDBase salary; significant stock options mentioned, not valued2026-10-10, no publication date shown
Anduril, Forward Deployed Engineer (Air Defense), Costa Mesa CA113,000 to 155,000 USDBase salary, mid-senior; equity grants mentioned, not valued. Note: this role leans toward field deployment and support, not greenfield delivery2026-10-10, posted about two weeks earlier
OpenAI, Forward Deployed Software Engineer, San Francisco (via job archive)185,000 to 325,000 USDPay band; the archive does not say base or total, and the live OpenAI listing showed no number2026-10-10; employer posting dated 2025-11-15
Palantir FDE self-reports (Levels.fyi)201,000 to 620,000 USD, median 255,000 USDReported total compensation, United States; self-reported, not a posted band2026-10-10; page labeled last updated 2026-10-10

Postings that showed no number

Honesty requires the gaps too: OpenAI's Tokyo Forward Deployed Engineer posting and both of Ramp's Forward Deployed listings showed no salary figure in their readable text on 2026-10-10. A missing band is not a low band; it is undisclosed.

How to read any band

Base bands understate pay wherever equity is mentioned without a value, which is nearly everywhere above. Level and city move the number more than the title does: a senior New York band and a mid-level Costa Mesa band are different jobs that happen to share a title. For the forces behind the numbers, read what actually drives the range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the typical forward deployed engineer salary?

Posted US base bands we verified on 2026-10-10 run roughly 113K to 200K USD depending on employer, level and city, with OpenAI's archived SF band at 185K to 325K and self-reported Palantir total compensation higher. Every figure depends on scope, level and location; read the table before quoting a single number.

Are these base salaries or total compensation?

The posting bands below are base salary unless labeled otherwise. Equity, RSUs and bonuses are usually mentioned without values, so the posted band understates total compensation by an unknown amount.

Does certification raise FDE salary?

No credential sets pay by itself. Employers pay for delivery scope and proof; a verifiable record helps negotiations, a PDF alone does not.
