Homelab projects that prove DevOps skills

Updated

Tower servers glowing blue and red in a rack

Employers trust running systems over certificates: four homelab builds that demonstrate real operations.

A homelab is a job interview that runs all year. Hiring managers skim certificates and read incident write-ups. Four builds cover the whole DevOps story: ship, watch, break, afford.

Four builds that matter

A gated pipeline. One repo, one pipeline, tests plus build plus a stop gate. Every change flows through it, including the homelab config itself.

Monitored services. Two or three real services with healthchecks, logs and one dashboard. Alerts go somewhere you read, with runbooks attached.

Documented incidents. Break things on purpose quarterly: kill the disk space, expire a certificate, corrupt the config. Write each up in four beats.

Tracked costs. Power, hardware and time logged monthly. Cost awareness at home transfers directly to cloud bills later.

Worked example: a fictional year of homelab

The context below is fictional. Fictional beginner Elif (fictional) starts with a single old laptop running two services behind a gated pipeline. Quarter one adds monitoring and the first on-purpose disk-full drill. Quarter two adds backups with restore tests. Year end: a public page with four incident write-ups, cost notes and pipeline history. Interviews talk about the write-ups, never about the hardware.

Checklist: a homelab that hires

  1. Pipeline gates every change, including infra.
  2. Alerts with runbooks, not just dashboards.
  3. Quarterly break-and-fix drills, written up.
  4. Costs tracked and public write-ups sanitized.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

How much hardware do I need?

One old laptop or a small single-board machine. Constraints teach more than racks; document them.

What impresses employers most?

Boring reliability: backups tested, incidents written up, costs tracked. Not exotic tooling.

Should it be public?

The write-ups public, the infrastructure private. Nobody needs your addresses and passwords.
