What stays
Discovery interviews, briefs, code, runbooks, readouts: all portable. A remote FDE can own the full loop for software-delivered systems.
What breaks
Ambient context: overhearing the workaround, seeing the spreadsheet that actually runs the department, the whiteboard after the meeting. Remote must schedule what colocated absorbs: operator shadowing sessions, screen-share ride-alongs, explicit "show me the real file" asks.
Worked example: the remote week that works
A fictional remote FDE (fictional) runs: Monday discovery calls with recordings and written briefs back to users; Tuesday to Thursday build with async demos; Friday readout plus a monthly two-day on-site burst for shadowing and relationship repair. Travel is 20 percent and scheduled, not emergency.
