An explicit agreement about a dataset's schema, semantics, quality rules and change process between producer and consumer.
Contracts make upstream changes visible before they break you: versioned schemas, nullability rules, freshness SLOs, and a breaking-change notification path. The 'v1.2 added a field' scenario in the ERP project is the case they prevent.
