The property that performing an operation multiple times has the same effect as performing it once.
Idempotency is what makes retries safe. Mechanisms: natural unique keys (order ID + version), idempotency keys accepted by the upstream API, and consumers that treat replays as no-ops. Essential in every integration pattern.
