Prepare Your First Project Brief with an AI Chat Tool
Updated · Tech checked
Turn a vague idea into a structured brief an AI tool can build from: one user, one task, scope, examples and measurable checks.
The direct answer
A usable first brief names one user, one main task, three features, what is out of scope, and three measurable checks. Write it before asking for any code. The brief builder tool on this site turns these fields into copyable text locally.
The fields
- User. One named person in one situation, e.g. a plumber quoting on the phone.
- Goal. The single task done well, e.g. read a line-by-line quote aloud.
- Scope. MUST for version one, LATER, NEVER. Payment, login and booking leave MUST.
- Examples. One filled input plus the exact expected output, e.g. 3 x 20 + 10 = 70.
- Checks. Three observable behaviors, e.g. no horizontal scroll at 360px.
Worked example
Bad brief: "Build me a business app, modern and complete." Nothing is checkable. Improved brief: user (plumber, phone call), three inputs (job list, hours, materials), output (per-line totals with a 25 fee), checks (210 for the sample, empty input explains, 360px fits). Lesson M02 and lab A04 walk the same conversion.
Errors to avoid
- Asking for plan and full code in one message. Ask for the plan first.
- Hiding the limits. Write what the version does not do.
- Pasting secrets. Passwords, keys and other people's data never enter the brief.
Frequently asked questions
Which chat tool should I use? Any general chat tool works for briefing practice; the course names no mandatory brand. Free tiers limit messages per period (checked 2026-10-04 on official pricing pages).
Do I need a paid plan? No. Briefing, the local brief builder, and the provided example responses all work without payment.
