Forward Deployed Engineer Skills: What Companies Actually Test
Updated · Tech checked
The core FDE skill set combines production-grade software engineering, customer discovery and scoping, data and integration fluency, judgment about where AI helps, and the communication ability to hold all of them together in a customer environment.
The skills that matter, ranked
Hiring loops for Forward Deployed Engineers rarely test on leetCode-style puzzles alone. They test for a portfolio of skills, roughly in this order of weight:
- Production software engineering - you can build a working, tested, observable service, not just a prototype.
- Customer discovery and problem framing - you can turn a vague complaint into a scoped, acceptable-criteria-bearing brief.
- Data and integration fluency - real enterprise work is moving, validating, and reconciling data between systems that were never designed to talk to each other.
- AI judgment - knowing where LLMs/RAG/agents add value, where a plain script wins, and how to evaluate either before deployment.
- Communication under pressure - you can explain a trade-off to a VP at 4pm and debug a webhook at 5pm, and the VP understands both.
The technical core
Software engineering
- Language fluency in at least one of Python or TypeScript, plus enough SQL to be dangerous.
- API design and consumption: REST, webhooks, auth flows (OAuth, API keys), idempotency keys, retries with backoff.
- Testing instincts: unit tests for logic, contract tests for integrations, and the discipline to verify in staging-like conditions before touching customer production.
- Version control hygiene: reviewable commits, honest commit messages - customer teams often read your work.
Data and integration
- ETL patterns: batching, incremental syncs, change data capture basics.
- Data quality checks: nullability, referential integrity, dedup rules - and reporting what you dropped and why.
- Schema evolution: what happens when the customer's ERP adds a field mid-project.
AI systems (where applicable)
- Retrieval pipelines: chunking strategies, metadata filters, hybrid search (BM25 + vectors), reranking.
- Evaluation: groundedness checks, golden sets, and the humility to baseline against a simple keyword search before claiming the vector DB "improved" anything.
- Agent patterns: tool contracts, human approval gates, loop and cost limits.
The human core
Discovery
The most undervalued FDE skill. Concrete behaviors:
- Ask "what happens today when this fails?" before asking "what do you want built?"
- Watch the actual operator (screen share, site visit) instead of relying on the manager's summary.
- Write the brief back to the customer and get explicit sign-off on scope and success metrics.
Communication
- Daily written updates that separate facts / decisions needed / risks.
- Explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders with analogies that survive scrutiny.
- Saying "no" or "not yet" with a reason and an alternative - customers respect a defended boundary far more than a quiet failure.
How companies assess these skills
| Skill | Typical assessment |
|---|---|
| Software engineering | Take-home build or live coding on a realistic task (parse messy data, build an idempotent webhook) |
| Discovery | Role-play: "here is our ops manager, run the first customer call" |
| Data handling | Given a corrupt CSV + an API doc, produce a load plan and error report |
| AI judgment | "Would you use an LLM here?" scenario discussion with cost/latency follow-ups |
| Communication | Present a trade-off or a failed deployment to interviewers playing executives |
Warning: many candidates prepare only the technical column. The most common FDE interview failures we see are discovery role-plays where the candidate started building before understanding the problem.
Building the gaps
For each skill above, our practice tasks give you a concrete deliverable, and the FDE roadmap sequences them. If you want a structured read on your current level, the free readiness quiz scores the domains separately - including discovery and communication, not just code.

Frequently asked questions
What skills does a Forward Deployed Engineer need?
Production software engineering, customer discovery and scoping, data/integration fluency, AI judgment where relevant, and clear communication with both engineers and executives.
Do FDEs need to be strong coders?
Yes. The role ships production software. Coding strength is table stakes; the differentiators are discovery, scoping, and communication.
Which programming languages do FDEs use?
Python and TypeScript dominate, with SQL everywhere. Language matters less than the ability to work with messy real systems under real constraints.
How do companies test FDE candidates?
Realistic take-homes, discovery role-plays, data-mess scenarios, AI trade-off discussions, and presenting technical decisions to non-technical interviewers.
