Publishing a Static Project (Optional)
Updated · Tech checked
Three files on a static host make a URL; custom domains, accounts and backends stay optional, publishing is never a certificate condition.
The direct answer
Publishing means uploading index.html, styles.css and app.js to a static host and opening the resulting URL. The host provides HTTPS automatically. No custom domain, no account upgrade, no backend. Publishing is optional: the certificate needs a working project, not a live URL.
Step by step
- Run the release checklist tool first: mobile, keyboard, empty data, reset, export, links, secrets, error states.
- Confirm no secret sits in any file: search for key, password, token.
- Upload the three files to any static host with a free tier.
- Open the URL on a phone and a desktop; re-run the five project tests.
- Keep the local folder as the source of truth, not the hosted copy.
Worked example
Capstone quote calculator: checklist passes, files uploaded, sample quote 210 renders on the phone, broken import still explains. Lab A23 covers the same checks with current host docs.
Errors to avoid
- Publishing with secrets in the files. They become public instantly.
- Buying a domain to feel finished. The project is finished when tests pass.
- Deleting local files after upload. The host is a copy, not a backup.
Frequently asked questions
Must I publish for the certificate? No. A working project plus the assessment is sufficient.
Which host should I pick? Any static host with a documented free tier; steps change, so follow the host's current docs (checked 2026-10-04).
