FDE Foundations interview questions and answers: 10 with diagrams.

Ten FDE interview questions with model answers: the role, discovery calls, framing, pilots, integration, AI decisions, RAG, agents and handover. Free, with diagrams, no account.

  1. What is a forward deployed engineer?

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside the customer's world: discovering the real problem on site, building the solution against production data, shipping it into the customer's environment and handing it over with runbooks. Discovery, building, shipping and handover are the four verbs; consulting-flavored engineering with production ownership.

The FDE loop: each step happens in the customer's environment, not in a lab.
  2. How do you answer: walk me through a discovery call?

Structure it as people, pain, proof. Who feels the problem and how often; what it costs in time, money or risk; what evidence you saw with your own eyes. End with a one-sentence problem framing and check it with the customer before any solution talk. Interviewers score whether you ask before you propose.

  3. A customer asks for a dashboard. What do you say?

You recover the decision behind the request: which decision should change, who makes it, and what they look at today. A dashboard nobody decides with is shelfware. Strong answers name the decision-maker and the current workaround, then propose the smallest view that changes the decision.

  4. What makes a good problem statement?

Who suffers, what it costs, where the friction lives. Example: support agents take 11 minutes per ticket because order history lives in three systems. Vague complaints (tooling is bad) and pre-baked solutions (we need AI) are not problem statements; measurable friction is.

  5. Pilot dilemma: quick workaround or proper fix?

Judge by reversibility and blast radius, not purity: is the failure mode understood, is it reversible, and does it have an owner? A reversible, owned workaround can be the right pilot call; an irreversible one never is. Say both the choice and the rollback plan.

    Acceptable workaround

    • Failure mode understood
    • Reversible in minutes
    • Named owner
    • Expiry date agreed

    Proper fix required

    • Irreversible data writes
    • Unknown failure modes
    • Nobody owns the risk
    • Customer cannot roll back
The workaround test: reversibility, ownership and a rollback path decide.
  6. Two systems disagree about customer data. How do you resolve it?

Integration conflicts are ownership conflicts first: name which system owns the record and how the others learn about changes. One owner plus a defined propagation path beats syncing machinery. Say the owner, the propagation and the conflict rule for simultaneous edits.

  7. When is machine learning the wrong answer?

When a fixed rule covers the cases and every mistake needs an explanation. Models earn their keep on fuzzy patterns at scale; deterministic rules win wherever correctness must be explained case by case. Name the explanation requirement explicitly.

  8. Explain RAG to a non-technical customer in thirty seconds.

The AI looks up your own documents before answering, and shows which passages it used. Answers stay fresh because nothing is memorized, and every claim can be opened and checked. Retrieval plus generation: fresh passages in, grounded answer out.

RAG in one line: retrieve first, then generate, always with checkable sources.
  9. What do you check before giving an AI agent a write action?

Confirmation, preview or undo for every irreversible step. Read steps are cheap; write steps need a gate. The model choice is secondary; action design is the safety story. Name one gate per write action in your answer.

  10. What belongs in a production handover?

How to know it is broken, who gets paged, and how to roll back, in that order. The handover serves the 3 a.m. reader: detection, escalation, rollback. History and screenshots rank below all three.

Handover priority from top to bottom: detection first, recovery last, nothing else above them.

About this interview set

How many questions are in the fde foundations interview questions and answers set?

Ten questions with model answers and diagrams. Read one, answer aloud, then compare with the model. There is no timer, no account and nothing recorded.

Are these real interview or exam questions?

No. They are practice items written for learning and never appear in any job interview bank or certification exam. Scores and answers stay with you; nothing counts toward any assessment.

What do I do after finishing the set?

Study the matching free course for the questions you missed, then test yourself on the sibling practice exam. When both feel easy, look at the certification sittings on the pricing page.
