How to Choose an FDE Course: 9 Checks Before You Pay

Updated · Tech checked

Judge any FDE course by instructor delivery evidence, practice volume, assessment realism, and honest claims - not by curriculum keywords. Nine checks that separate working programs from slide decks.

The short answer

The FDE course market is new and uneven. The program quality hides in the practice structure, not the syllabus wording. Nine checks, in order of predictive value:

  1. Instructor delivery evidence. Have the instructors shipped customer-facing systems? Named cases (even anonymized) or it's theory.
  2. Hands-on ratio. Count deliverables, not video hours. You want >1 graded practical per 2 hours of content.
  3. Realistic artifacts. Are assignments briefs-with-metrics (like the real brief template) or "build a demo"?
  4. Feedback mechanism. Who reviews your work - automated quizzes only is a red flag for delivery skills.
  5. Assessment separation. If they sell a "certification," is it examined independently of the course purchase?
  6. Cohort or self-paced honesty. "Community" claims should name actual review capacity.
  7. Refund and access terms stated before payment, not in the final FAQ.
  8. Claims hygiene. No placement guarantees, no salary promises, no "official FDE certification" (nothing official exists - see the certifications guide).
  9. Sample lesson. Judge the writing/code quality yourself before paying.

The price question

Expensive ≠ good; free ≠ worthless. Price predicts service level (review capacity, support), not content quality. A free practice set with honest rubrics - like our practice tasks - can outperform a $2k video library for actually building skill.

Our stake, disclosed
