Rehearse a Migration with Checkpoint and Verification
55 min hands-on · Advanced
A local machine with a fixture source and target store; the checkpoint document is the deliverable alongside the migrated data.
Local guide: run the steps below on your own machine in order, then check the validation list.
Objectives
- Walk copy, dual-run, verify, cut and retire on fixtures
- Cut at a written checkpoint with the old path warm
- Retire explicitly with the archive noted
Step 1
Copy and dual-run
Copy fixture data to the target, start dual writes, and reconcile continuously. Quote the comparisons converging to zero diff.
Step 2
Checkpoint and cut
Write the checkpoint (moment, authority transfer, way back with its test), cut traffic, and verify equality after the cut with quoted evidence. Keep the old path warm and tested.
Step 3
Retire
After a soak period with clean reconciliation, retire the old store explicitly: archive noted, shutdown recorded, final reconciliation against the archive quoted.
How to confirm it worked
- Five stations evidenced with quoted comparisons
- Checkpoint document with tested way back
- Post-cut verification quoted with old path warm
- Explicit retirement with archive and final check
