Compute SLI and Error Budget, Justify the Alert Decision

50 min hands-on · Advanced

A local machine with the provided fixture event series (labeled fixtures, small modular dataset). No production data anywhere.

Local guide: run the steps below on your own machine in order, then check the validation list.

Objectives

  • Compute the SLI ratio from the given series
  • Compute budget consumed and remaining against the stated SLO
  • Write the page-or-ticket decision with user-impact justification
  1. Step 1

    Compute the SLI

From the fixture series, count valid events and good events, compute the ratio, and compare against the stated SLO. Show the arithmetic, not just the answer.

  2. Step 2

    Spend the budget on paper

Compute budget consumed and remaining, project exhaustion at current burn with the month remainder, and separate fast-burn windows from slow-burn trend.

  3. Step 3

    Decide and justify

Write the alert decision: page the fast burn with its runbook first action, ticket the trend, and delete-or-keep one symptom alert with a quoted reason. Every number labeled fixture.

How to confirm it worked

  • SLI arithmetic shown from the series
  • Budget remaining with projection quoted
  • Page-or-ticket decision justified by user impact
  • Symptom alert handled with a quoted reason
