FDE Foundations · Module 1: The FDE Role

FDE vs Adjacent Roles

The FDE role overlaps with several titles, but accountability for production delivery at the customer is the distinguishing part.

Objectives

  • Position the FDE role against product engineering, solutions architecture, consulting, and support
  • Identify which parts of each role an FDE absorbs
  • Explain the accountability difference

Where the boundaries sit

The FDE borrows from four neighboring roles and stops where each of them stops.

RoleWhat they doWhere the FDE differs
Product engineerBuilds features from a roadmapFDE generates the roadmap item from discovery
Solutions architectDesigns systems, writes proposalsFDE also builds and runs the design
ConsultantAdvises, often delivers slidesFDE delivers working software in production
Support engineerFixes reported issuesFDE prevents issues by owning design through handover

The accountability test

Ask a simple question for any title: who is accountable when the customer's production system misbehaves in week three? A product engineer routes to support. A consultant points at the implementation team. An FDE owns it, because they shipped it.

Practical implications

Hiring managers screen for range: can one person interview an operator, write code, negotiate with security, and brief an executive? Candidates should prepare evidence of each. Teams should know the role is broad by design; narrowing it back to a single specialty recreates the handoff gaps the role exists to close.

Quick check

An optional 2-3 question self-check. Answers never leave your device, are not stored, and never count toward any assessment.

Exercise

Write a 150-word answer to: 'Why do you want an FDE role instead of a product engineering role?' Reference at least two of the four role boundaries from the table.

Pass criteria

Answer stays under 160 words, names at least two adjacent roles, and gives one concrete personal motivation rather than a generic preference for variety.
