Probes and logs

30 min hands-on · Core

Browser Kubernetes (Killercoda 1-node) or Play-with-Kubernetes; no local installs.

Two ways to do this lab: in your browser on Killercoda (free, no install), or on Play-with-Kubernetes as a free practice field. The Killercoda button opens in a new tab; this study page stays here. Killercoda runs one free scenario at a time: if you see a waiting queue, close other Killercoda tabs and wait a minute.

Objectives

  • Fit liveness, readiness and startup probes to a slow starter
  • Read multi-container logs and pick the guilty container
  • Watch resource pressure with top before it becomes theory
  1. Step 1

    Slow starter, right probes

Deploy an app that needs ~30s before it serves. Fit a startupProbe that covers the delay plus liveness/readiness for steady state. Prove with describe that no restarts happen.

  2. Step 2

    Whose log is it

Deploy a two-container pod where the sidecar fails. Find it with per-container logs (`-c`), previous logs after a restart, and sorted events. Record the exact three commands.

How to confirm it worked

  • Zero restarts on the slow starter, probe shapes recorded
  • Guilty container named from logs with commands on record
