Back to lesson: YAML Speed for Developers: vim and Generate
Free lab · CKAD Prep Program · Module 1: Strategy and speed
YAML from dry-run
25 min hands-on · Core
Browser Kubernetes (Killercoda 1-node) or Play-with-Kubernetes; no local installs.
Two ways to do this lab: in your browser on Killercoda (free, no install), or on Play-with-Kubernetes as a free practice field. The Killercoda button opens in a new tab; this study page stays here. Killercoda runs one free scenario at a time: if you see a waiting queue, close other Killercoda tabs and wait a minute.
Objectives
- Generate Pod, Deployment and Service YAML without typing it
- Apply, edit and re-apply through the full loop
Step 1
Generate everything
Produce Pod, Deployment and ClusterIP Service manifests using only `kubectl create ... -o yaml --dry-run=client` redirected to files. Typing YAML by hand is forbidden in this round.
Step 2
Loop it
Apply the files, change the image on the Deployment with `kubectl set image`, verify the rollout, then roll back with `kubectl rollout undo`. Record each command.
How to confirm it worked
- Three manifests generated from dry-run, zero hand-typed
- Rollout completed and rolled back with recorded commands
