YAML Speed Without Typing YAML
The fastest YAML is generated YAML. This lesson builds the developer speed kit: imperative generation, instant verification, and minute-zero setup that pays all session.
10 min reading
Objectives
- Generate every workload from imperative commands with dry-run
- Verify with describe and get before moving to the next task
- Keep jq-free jsonpath one-liners for answer extraction
- Preload namespace, context and editor settings in minute zero
Why this matters
CKAD tasks ask for files and fields at a pace hand-authorship cannot match. Candidates who type manifests debug syntax; candidates who generate manifests debug apps. The exam scores apps. Every generated manifest also carries valid structure for free, which removes a whole miss class.
Concepts
Generation covers nearly everything: kubectl create deployment, kubectl run with restart flags, kubectl expose, kubectl create configmap/secret from literals and files, all with -o yaml --dry-run=client redirected to files. Edit only the differing fields: image, probes, resources, volumes. Verification is instant: kubectl apply --dry-run=client validates, describe confirms wiring, get ... -o yaml shows exact state for answers.
Minute-zero setup: confirm namespace and context first (wrong-namespace work scores zero), set the editor for YAML, preload the three generation lines in notes. jsonpath one-liners extract answers without re-reading whole manifests: image names, IPs, probe paths.
Worked example
A config-plus-probe task at kit pace:
k config use-context task-ctx && k config view --minify | grep ns # right place first
k create configmap app-cfg --from-literal=mode=prod -o yaml --dry-run=client > cm.yaml
k create deploy api --image=nginx:1.25 -o yaml --dry-run=client > deploy.yaml
# edit deploy.yaml: envFrom, probes (startup + liveness), resources
k apply -f cm.yaml -f deploy.yaml --dry-run=client # validate first
k apply -f cm.yaml -f deploy.yaml
k get deploy api -o jsonpath='{.spec.template.spec.containers[0].image}' # answer extracted
# hand-typed lines: zero. Syntax misses available: zeroThe only typing is field edits inside valid structure. Verification precedes commitment at every step.
Exam notes
Namespace first is non-negotiable: generated perfection in the wrong namespace is a zero with extra steps. Dry-run validation before real apply catches the field errors while they are cheap. And jsonpath quoting breaks under rush: practice the three answer-extraction shapes in the M00 drill until they are reflex.
Quick check
A 4-question self-check. Your answers stay on your device, are never stored or sent. Only a passing score (for example 3 of 4) is saved, and only to unlock lesson progress: at least 3 correct is required before a lesson counts as complete. It never counts toward any certification assessment.

Exercise
Time yourself authoring a fictional deployment with config, probes and resources using generation only. Log commands with stamps, then name the hand-typed lines that remain and the template that would erase each.
Pass criteria
Timed log present; generation-only rule followed; remaining hand-typed lines listed honestly with erasing templates named.
